December 2, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The major online poker websites PokerStars.com and Full Tilt Poker.com continued to attract large numbers to Sunday tournaments this week, generating impressive prize pools and high value prizes to the winners.

Full Tilt’s $750,000 Guaranteed event also recorded increased entries with 3,668 sign-ups, but this still did not make the guarantee and FT had to put up the $16,400 balance. David “Doc Sands” Sands faced ‘andressoprano’ in the heads up, winning the event to claim the $132,787 first-place prize. His opponent collected a check for $80,250 for his second placing.

Online Poker Pro Takes Down FTOPS X Event
November 17, 2008
Cliff Josephy, better known to his high-stakes online peers as JohnnyBax, took down a tough field of 1,025 to win the Omaha Eight-or-Better event and his share of a $205,000 prize pool. A difficult final table included British pro and WSOP bracelet-winner Ram Vaswani.
In other events, the No-Limit Hold ‘em 6-max event created a $1.13m prize pool between the 1,032 players who signed up. David Pham took a hefty slice of that by finishing in third place, while other cashing pros included Chip Jett and Clonie Gowen.
The winners from Tuesday were losebigpots in Event 12, the $200$16 HA; LaTanyaWilliams in Event 13, $500$35 H.O.R.S.E.; and imabigkidnow in Event 14, $200$26 No-Limit Hold ‘em Turbo.
Eastgate Becomes Youngest WSOP Champ Yet
November 12, 2008
November 11, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The 22-year-old Danish player Peter Eastgate has survived a field of thousands, a competitive final table, and a tough heads up with the formidable Russian player Ivan Demidov to emerge as the winner of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event.
Starting the heads up last night at the Rio in Las Vegas, Eastgate was seriously short — to the tune of 21,775,000 — of Demidov’s massive 79,500,000 chip count, but he lived up to his reputation of cool, collected play and disciplined aggression to end the evening with around 120,550,000 in chips to his opponent’s 16,350,000!
The final drama was played out under bright television lights following a 2008 WSOP Player of the Year presentation to veteran Erick Lindgren, who looked pleased with his prize of a cool-looking Harley Davidson motor cycle. After that, it was the respected poker announcer Michael Buffer who was given the honor of making the “Shuffle Up and Deal” call, and the action was on.
104 hands later, at hand 274 the young Danish accountant-turned-poker-pro eliminated the hard-fighting Russian to become the first Dane to hold the title, and the youngest player ever to win poker’s biggest tournament, breaking a record held over the last 19 years by Phil Hellmuth. He joins an elite list that includes Brunson, Moss, Ungar, Chan, Ferguson, Hellmuth, Yang, Gold, Hachem, Raymer, Moneymaker, Nguyen and a host of other top players going back to 1970.
Demidov’s second place finish carries a significant consolation — a check for $5,809,595, and he has earned respect for his performance in reaching the final tables at both the Vegas and London editions of the WSOP.
Flanked by Vegas showgirls, Eastgate lived up to his reputation as a calm and even subdued personality, politely thanking his opponent and the sponsors and expressing quiet pride in his achievment. But a smile eventually appeared as he hefted a couple of currency bundles from the suitcase full of cash that was on display.
The 2008 WSOP final table will probably enter the records as one of the longest ever, taking over 16 hours to reach a conclusion. It will also be famous for big blinds reaching the million chip level, where some 32 hands were slugged out.

Retired Real Estate Man Is the New North American Poker Champ
67-year-old outlasts a field of 454 entrants
October 20, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — A 67-year-old retired real estate broker took home the honors and a $1.2 million main prize at the Fallsview Casino at Niagara Falls this week when he won the North American Poker Championship.
Glen Witmer survived a field of 454 entrants, which was whittled away over seven tough days, competing in only his second major buy-in poker tournament. Witmer and fellow amateur player Jim Trenholm (41) of Toronto were the only two amateur players to make it to the final table, where they faced four experienced professionals across the felt.
Unfortunately, Trenholm — a firefighter by profession — didn’t last long and was the first of the final table eliminations. He was followed by Ottawa poker pro Marc Karam, who headed for the rail in fifth place and a paycheck of $171,175. Next to go was another Canadian professional and Internet player, Ryan Fisler, who pocketed $228,234 for his fourth placing.
Respected U.S. player Kathy Leibert headed for the exit in third place with a $277,684 paycheck, clearing the way for the heads up between Witmer and the high-profile tournament pro Gavin Smith, who lives in Las Vegas.
In the final denouement, the players went all-in with Smith holding a pair of pocket fives to Witmer’s ace-king. The cards fell Smith’s way, until an ace on the river sent Smith home with $532,545 and gave the championship and the huge payday to Witmer.
It was an outstanding return for very little investment by the ex-real estate broker — he satellited into the event for just $170, and did considerably better than his showing last year when he was eliminated just six hours into the tournament.
Asked about his plans for the poker bonanza, Witmer revealed that he had celebrated his 47th wedding anniversary during the championship and would be taking his wife on an extended vacation with his winnings.

Bodog Loses Domain Confiscation Appeal (Update)
U.S. default judgment is now a massive $50 million
October 9, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The acrimonious patents dispute between 1st Technology LLC and the online gambling group Bodog has entered a new phase following the failure of a Bodog appeal to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit this week.
The matter has its roots in a patents infringement claim launched in June 2007 in a Nevada court by 1st Technology, which Bodog failed to attend amid arguments regarding the proper service of process. In the case, 1st Tech obtained a default judgement for $46,597,849 and the confiscation of Bodog domains, which forced a rebranding exercise. A subsequent case in Washington State likewise did not go well for the online gambling group.
Bodog apparently appealed the hefty default judgment in an effort to overturn the District Court of Nevada judge’s ruling, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has now supported the lower court’s ruling.
The amount due to 1st Technology from Bodog now exceeds $50 million, says 1st Tech CEO Dr. Scott Lewis.
“We cannot be more pleased,” Lewis says of the failure of the appeal. “Bodog has consistently tried to circumvent the United States justice system, and disregarded the legitimacy of our claims against it. We now have the certainty we need to accelerate our seizure of any and all global assets to satisfy the judgment, and bring fairness and respect back to Bodog’s commercial dealings.”
Flachsbart & Greenspoon LLC, a Chicago law firm, won the appeal for 1st Technology in Appeal No. 2008-1132.
The failure of Bodog’s appeal follows a victory for 1st Tech in the District of Western Washington last week, where a court granted significant parts of a preliminary injunction to halt any transactions or transfers of Bodog’s trademarks.
The co-pending lawsuit in Washington seeks (among other claims) to undo conveyances among defendants Bodog Entertainment Group S.A., Bodog IP Holdings Ltd., and GK World Link Telecom S.A. Both Flachsbart & Greenspoon and Venkat Balasubramani represent 1st Technology in Case No. 08-CV-872 in the Western District of Washington.
State of Kentucky attempts to seize online gambling domains
October 10, 2008
The State of Kentucky recently attempted to sieze 141 online gambling domains. Their intent is to shut down these gambling sites. The domains that they are attempting to seize are some of the biggest online poker rooms and casinos in the industry including such giants as Poker Stars and Absolute Poker.
This is an interesting development that bears watching. While many of us who gamble online may say that Kentucky will not be successful, the truth is, once the case is in the courts their is no telling what might happen.
Their is a really good blog post that I think you will find really insightful. It is on the blog for Poker Affiliate Programs. Click Here to Read the Blog Post.
