December 2, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The major online poker websites PokerStars.com and Full Tilt Poker.com continued to attract large numbers to Sunday tournaments this week, generating impressive prize pools and high value prizes to the winners.

At PokerStars, Peter “twirlpro” Turmezy took down the top prize of almost $200,000, with his heads up opponent ‘fratzl‘ also taking home a six-figure paycheck worth some $132,176. The Sunday Millions tourney in which they competed attracted an entry field of 8,001 players, up 246 from the week prior, and generated a prize pool of $1.6 million.

Full Tilt’s $750,000 Guaranteed event also recorded increased entries with 3,668 sign-ups, but this still did not make the guarantee and FT had to put up the $16,400 balance. David “Doc Sands” Sands faced ‘andressoprano’ in the heads up, winning the event to claim the $132,787 first-place prize. His opponent collected a check for $80,250 for his second placing.

Cliff Josephy, better known to his high-stakes online peers as JohnnyBax, took down a tough field of 1,025 to win the Omaha Eight-or-Better event and his share of a $205,000 prize pool. A difficult final table included British pro and WSOP bracelet-winner Ram Vaswani.

November 11, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The 22-year-old Danish player Peter Eastgate has survived a field of thousands, a competitive final table, and a tough heads up with the formidable Russian player Ivan Demidov to emerge as the winner of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event.

Starting the heads up last night at the Rio in Las Vegas, Eastgate was seriously short — to the tune of 21,775,000 — of Demidov’s massive 79,500,000 chip count, but he lived up to his reputation of cool, collected play and disciplined aggression to end the evening with around 120,550,000 in chips to his opponent’s 16,350,000!

The final drama was played out under bright television lights following a 2008 WSOP Player of the Year presentation to veteran Erick Lindgren, who looked pleased with his prize of a cool-looking Harley Davidson motor cycle. After that, it was the respected poker announcer Michael Buffer who was given the honor of making the “Shuffle Up and Deal” call, and the action was on.

104 hands later, at hand 274 the young Danish accountant-turned-poker-pro eliminated the hard-fighting Russian to become the first Dane to hold the title, and the youngest player ever to win poker’s biggest tournament, breaking a record held over the last 19 years by Phil Hellmuth. He joins an elite list that includes Brunson, Moss, Ungar, Chan, Ferguson, Hellmuth, Yang, Gold, Hachem, Raymer, Moneymaker, Nguyen and a host of other top players going back to 1970.

Demidov’s second place finish carries a significant consolation — a check for $5,809,595, and he has earned respect for his performance in reaching the final tables at both the Vegas and London editions of the WSOP.

Flanked by Vegas showgirls, Eastgate lived up to his reputation as a calm and even subdued personality, politely thanking his opponent and the sponsors and expressing quiet pride in his achievment. But a smile eventually appeared as he hefted a couple of currency bundles from the suitcase full of cash that was on display.

The 2008 WSOP final table will probably enter the records as one of the longest ever, taking over 16 hours to reach a conclusion. It will also be famous for big blinds reaching the million chip level, where some 32 hands were slugged out.

One of the world’s top poker pros, 34-year-old Monaco-based Gus “The Great Dane” Hansen, has been causing havoc in the big money online poker action at Full Tilt.com, earning a million dollars in a single day at one stage, reports the HighStakesDb.com poker information site. And playing against some of the best players around on Full Tilt, his October 2008 earnings thus far have reached $3.2 million.

On Monday night alone, Hansen won more than $589,000 at Hold ‘em, $145,000 in PLO, $152,000 in Omaha Hi/Lo, and $97,000 in a HORSEgame, demonstrating a mastery of the diverse poker styles and rules.

Originally from Copenhagen in Denmark, Hansen is famous for his loose and aggressive style of play, and started playing poker as a professional in 1997. Before that he was a world-class backgammon player who tried to make a living at the game in New York and abroad but found the pickings too slim.

In his outstanding poker career The Great Dane can boast a long record of wins in significant tournaments. He has won a record three World Poker Tour open titles, the 2007 Aussie Millions main event, and was the season one winner of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. His official career winnings recently topped $5,837,633, and he describes his approach to the game as: “I play the players, not the cards.”

October 20, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — Only days after achieving licenced status with the Italian regulator Amministrazione Autonome dej Monopoli di Stato (AAMS), the giant online poker website PokerStars.com has launched its Italian offering at PokerStars.it.

Fabio Angeli Bufalini, PokerStars Italian manager, invited his fellow Italians to try the new website out for themselves, joining the thousands of Internet poker players around the world who use the site on a daily basis. He commented: “PokerStars is proud to be entering a flourishing market with this new product. This is a groundbreaking time for the online poker industry, and it’s very exciting that the Italian market is pioneering this move.

“This is the start of a global template which could potentially be adopted in other markets internationally in the next few years.”

Italian players will have access to the full range of services and tournaments offered by PokerStars, said Dario Minieri, an internationally respected land and online Italian pro and member of Team PokerStars. “Players on PokerStars.it will have the opportunity to win their entry into famous international poker events — like the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas,” he said.

“These competitions require players to have the right mix of skill, training, concentration, and luck.”

Luca Pagano, Max Pescatori, Jeff Lisandro, Dario Alioto, and Marco Traniello are all successful Italian players who form a powerful nucleus of role models for their countrymen interested in playing poker for real money.

PokerStars market research estimates that during this first year of online poker being legalized in the country, up to 500,000 new player accounts will be opened throughout the Italian online poker industry, creating an estimated €400 million market.
