Understanding Omaha
Poker Variations
Many people make the common
mistake of believing that Omaha is Omaha and
that is that. The problem with that
misconception is that it is not true. There are
many different variations of the game that
should be understood before diving in. First,
you must realize the different variations of the
game itself. From there, you will want to
understand the variations of betting that goes
along with the different Omaha games.
There are two different games of
Omaha, which are actually two totally different
games. Still, many make the mistake of thinking
they are all the same. The first one is just
normal straight forward Omaha. Then there is
Omaha Hi/Lo which is a completely different
game. Omaha Hi Lo is also known as Omaha 8. You
will find these different games all over the
place. Do not get confused into believing that
they are all the same thing. You will be able to
figure out the differences very easily once you
understand that there are differences. The more
difficult thing to understand at first is the
different variations of each of these games.
What is being talked about is the betting
variations in these games.
Omaha Betting Variations
There are three basic kinds of
Omaha games, all of which can be found in Omaha
and Omaha Hi Lo. They can also be found in a lot
of other poker games as well. The three betting
variations are Fixed Limit Omaha, No Limit Omaha
and Pot Limit Omaha. They all offer very
different styles, but they are basically the
same game. The only real difference is the
betting and limits that takes place throughout
the game.
The first and most common type of
Omaha is probably pot limit. This just simply
means that you cannot bet anymore than what is
in the pot. So if there was $100 in the pot, you
could only bet $100. It is fairly simple, and
gives a lot more room to bet a lot than fixed
limit. Still, it does not have quite as much
room as No Limit does.
Another popular variation is No
Limit Omaha. Just about anyone who knows even a
little about poker knows about No Limit Texas
Hold'em. No Limit Omaha is the same thing as far
as the betting goes. There is no betting limit,
and no restrictions. Different stakes and levels
will have different blinds and starting amounts,
but there will never be a betting limit in No
Limit Omaha. This is one of the most exciting
poker games you will ever find yourself playing
in.
Next would be perhaps the least
common type of Omaha game, being fixed limit.
This is where you're really going to be limited
to what you are aloud to bet. The first 2 rounds
you will be able to bet a specific amount and
then in the second 2 rounds you will be able to
bet another set amount. For example in Omaha
Fixed Limit 5/10, you would bet in increments of
$5 for the first 2 rounds (no more and no less).
In the last 2 rounds you would be able to be in
increments of $10 (no more and no less). As you
can see, this will definitely call for a
slightly different strategy than your No Limit
or even Pot Limit game.
Variation Strategies
The important thing to keep in
mind is that there are different strategies for
all of these different variations. Different
playing styles and different personalities will
do better at different variations. You are able
to protect your cards a lot better in a No Limit
game for example. In a Limit game, you may find
that it is very hard to protect good hands and
that you get ran down a lot. Those are the kinds
of things you will want to think about when you
are diving into the different strategies.
The best way to really learn the
strategies is to play in the different
variations. Do not be afraid to test out
different betting styles and play different
games. Just because you are used to something
doesn't mean that it will be the best possible
game for you. You may find that your style
matches up a lot better with a different kind of
variation than what you are currently playing
in.
If you have not played Omaha at
all, then a good place to start would be with
Pot Limit. The reason is because; Pot Limit
Omaha is a nice median between fixed limit and
No Limit. Even Fixed Limit can get a little bit
out of hand, if you are playing in some higher
stakes games. Either way, there is no reason
that as a poker player you will not be able to
find a betting variation that fits your styles
well in Omaha. |
