Playing Two Pair

Two pair is a pretty good hand and will win you a good percentage of pots. If you are up against a scary board with straight and flush possibilities, or if there is a lot of betting action going on, then you will need to be careful. You see, while two pair is a pretty good hand in the game of Texas Holdem poker, there are still a lot of hands that can beat it. In a No Limit Texas Holdem game, you are able to put enough pressure on the two pair on the flop to protect your hand. In a limit Texas Holdem poker game, you do not have the ability to raise as much because the betting is regulated in limit Texas Holdem poker.

On The Flop

When you have two pair on the flop, you have a very strong hand. Unless there is a scary board with 3 suited cards on it, or with a straight draw on it, then you have to play your hand very strong. This is not the kind of a hand where you want to let other players develop something. You want them out of the hand so you can take the pot. Two pair is a strong hand on the flop, but as the pot gets bigger and other players develop draws, it will get to be a harder hand to win with.

On The Turn

On the turn, you still have a pretty strong hand. If flush draws and straight draws have come up, then you will need to be weary of that. If the board only indicates a possible draw, then you need to make it very expensive for the other players to draw for their hand. If you do not bet big enough, then the pot odds will dictate that the other players draw to make their hands.

On The River

On the river, there are no more cards to come and there are no more draws. You need to consider what possible hands that the other players in the hand could have made. Sometimes, when you are making this decision, you should think about what you know about the players that are in the hand with you. If you think about the possible hands that the other players have, and then think back through the earlier streets of the hand, you should wonder if they would have acted the way they did with the cards that they would need to make the hand that you are afraid that they have right now.

Knowing When to Say Goodbye

When the cards on the board open up possibilities for other players to make straights and flushes, and the betting action gets cranked up, you need to seriously consider the fact that you no longer have the best hand. Knowing when to say good bye to a hand and fold it is a very important skill. While your hand was not unbeatable, even on a totally innocuous flop because an other player might have a set, it showed a lot more promise than it does on the river with a scary flop and a lot of betting action.
